Swindon Foodbank is going to be five years old in November. Will you help us meet the rising number of people using Foodbank by giving us a birthday gift?
Project Manager Richard Belsham said, “We’ve been so thankful to all those people who have donated food over the last five years – it’s truly been amazing. But if anyone would like to help us further, with a small donation of £5 - a pound for every year we've been in operation - that would be brilliant. And as Christmas is coming up as well, it’s a great chance to get into the spirit of festive fundraising!”
In the past five years the charity, which was set up by Swindon Christian Community Projects (SCCP), has fed hundreds of Swindon families, helping prevent a crisis becoming a disaster.
“The number of people we fed in a month doubled from 2008 to 2009 and who knows if this will get worse. In five years we’ve relied on donations to pay for the warehouse, the van, all our running costs - and we’ve never yet missed a bill. But we know we could do more.
“We couldn’t do the work we do without the support from the town. All the food is donated, whether at our supermarket collections or by community groups or offices making monthly collections. In five years we’ve given away over 667,500 tins of food - more than 100 tonnes! We have an army of volunteers who sort and pack the food, and even our finances are totally voluntary contributions.”
Richard said, “We’re delighted to be celebrating our fifth year in Swindon, and know that the work will continue to grow. We hope that even more people will get behind the vision of local people helping local people and get involved.”
Yes! I'd like to give Swindon Foodbank a birthday gift!
