The Trussell Trust, the parent organisation which has launched the Foodbank Network, announced in April the opening of their 201st Foodbank in the UK!
When you consider that when Swindon Foodbank opened several years ago it was the eighth Foodbank to open its doors, this is a fantastic milestone to have been reached. In the last year the number off Foodbanks has doubled, with 100 hundred being opened in the 2011-12 period. The opening of Foodbank 201 just shows that the need across the country is continuing to grow. The Trussell Trust has announced that their target is to reach 450 Foodbanks by 205 - and they are well on track to reaching it.
In Swindon alone we have seen the need for our service increase year on year. In 2011 we fed some 3,700 people, and the forecast for 2012 is an increase of 40%, which means we can expect to exceed 5,000 people this year. We grateful for a full Warehouse of food at the moment, but with so many families to feed we cannot rest on our laurels to keep collecting!
